The future of Artificial Intelligence (AI) will not depend on massive and expensive systems. Instead, it will be shaped by smaller, faster, and more efficient AI models, said Union Minister for Electronics and IT, Ashwini Vaishnaw, at the World Economic Forum in Davos.
According to the Minister, most real-world AI applications today do not need extremely large models. Nearly 95% of AI tasks are already handled by smaller models, which are cheaper, easier to deploy, and faster to operate.
Why Smaller AI Models Matter
Large AI models require heavy computing power, huge data centers, and high energy consumption. On the other hand, compact AI models:
- Cost less to develop and run
- Work faster on regular devices
- Use less electricity
- Can be deployed easily across industries
This makes them ideal for businesses, startups, and governments that want affordable AI solutions.
India’s AI Strategy
India is focusing on building practical and enterprise-ready AI models. The government is supporting the development of around 12 advanced AI models ranging from 50 to 120 billion parameters. These models are designed to solve real problems in sectors like healthcare, finance, education, manufacturing, and governance.
Ashwini Vaishnaw said that India is not just building AI software but also strengthening the entire AI ecosystem.
Strengthening the AI Value Chain
India is investing across the complete AI value chain, including:
- AI model development
- Semiconductor manufacturing
- Data center infrastructure
- Clean energy solutions
The government’s semiconductor program is moving fast. Around 10 semiconductor plants are currently under development, with some already starting pilot production.
This will reduce India’s dependence on foreign chips and make the country more self-reliant in advanced technology.
New AI Innovations on the Way
The Minister also spoke about new AI capabilities, such as sound-to-sound AI, where machines can directly convert one sound into another without using text. He believes such innovations will transform how people interact with technology.
India’s Growing Startup Power
India’s strong startup ecosystem is another major advantage. With over 2 lakh startups, India is now among the top three startup ecosystems in the world. Many of these startups are working on AI-based solutions, helping India become a global innovation hub.
Conclusion
Mr. Vaishnaw’s message is clear:
The future of AI is not about size — it is about speed, efficiency, and real-world impact.
By focusing on smaller, smarter AI models and building strong digital infrastructure, India is positioning itself as a global leader in next-generation AI technology.
