And we aren’t just talking about vague “what if” discussions in a boardroom—employees have reportedly already created mockups to see exactly how ads will look inside your chat window.

If you’re a heavy user like me, you probably have a few questions. Here is the lowdown on what is happening and whether it’s going to ruin the app we all rely on.

The Leak: It’s Not Just a Rumor Anymore

For a long time, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman was pretty vocal about hating ad-supported models. He wanted a subscription business. But let’s face reality: running these AI models costs an absolute fortune—estimated at around $700,000 a day just to keep the lights on.

ChatGPT won because it gave us the answer, not the sales pitch.

If OpenAI isn’t careful, introducing ads could break the one thing they have that matters most: Trust. If the AI suggests a product, do I trust that it’s actually the best one, or did that company just outbid the competitor in an ad auction?

The Silver Lining (Maybe?)

To play devil’s advocate, ads might actually be good for the ecosystem in one specific way: It keeps the Free Tier free.
